Wisdom Tooth Pain: Relief at Home & When to See a Dentist
Wisdom tooth pain has a way of arriving at the worst possible time — usually late at night. As the oral surgeon at Sanjeevani, here's what actually helps, and when that nagging ache means it's time to come in.
Fast relief you can try at home
- Warm salt-water rinse. Half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, swished gently, several times a day. It calms inflamed gum and cleans trapped debris.
- Cold compress. An ice pack wrapped in cloth against the cheek, 15 minutes on and off, eases swelling and numbs the ache.
- Over-the-counter painkillers. Paracetamol as per the packet helps most people. Take it with food.
- Keep it clean. Gently brush the area — a build-up of food makes the infection and pain worse.
Never place an aspirin tablet directly on the gum — it burns the tissue and makes things worse. Painkillers work by being swallowed, not applied.
When to see a dentist — soon
Home measures buy comfort, not a cure. Come in promptly if you have:
- Pain lasting more than 2–3 days, or getting worse
- Swelling of the gum, cheek or jaw
- Difficulty opening your mouth or swallowing
- A bad taste, pus, or fever
- Repeated flare-ups in the same spot
Swelling with fever or trouble swallowing is a same-day matter — message us on WhatsApp or use our emergency care.
Does the wisdom tooth have to come out?
Not always. If it has grown straight, bites properly and can be cleaned, we leave it alone. Removal is advised when it's impacted (stuck sideways), repeatedly infected, badly decayed, or damaging the tooth in front of it.
What extraction actually involves
Under local anaesthesia the area is fully numb — you feel pressure, not pain. A simple tooth is out in minutes; an impacted one is removed carefully through a small opening. Afterwards, expect some swelling for 2–4 days, well controlled with painkillers and cold compresses. Full details are on our wisdom tooth extraction page.
The bottom line
Home relief is for getting through tonight. If pain keeps returning, the tooth is telling you something — and an X-ray will show whether it needs to go before it causes a bigger, more expensive problem.
Frequently asked questions
How can I relieve wisdom tooth pain at home?
Rinse with warm salt water, apply a cold compress to the cheek, take paracetamol with food, and keep the area gently cleaned. Never put aspirin directly on the gum — it burns the tissue.
When should I see a dentist for wisdom tooth pain?
If pain lasts more than 2–3 days or worsens, or if you have swelling, fever, a bad taste or trouble opening your mouth. Swelling with fever or difficulty swallowing needs same-day care.
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. A wisdom tooth that grows straight, bites properly and can be cleaned can stay. Removal is advised for impacted, repeatedly infected, badly decayed teeth, or ones harming the neighbouring tooth.
